New School Year

We got a late start with school this year due to a fun trip to California last month, but we hit it hard this week. We keep it pretty basic in our homeschool, just the three Rs. After Ryan finishes his three Rs, he then is free to do art, crafts, reading or the activity of his choice. Currently, he is fascinated (obsessed?) with storms and natural disasters such as hurricanes, tornados, lightning, volcanoes, and earthquakes, so he reads books and magazines all about those, as well as watching DVDs we check out from the library about weather and such. He doesn't know he's "doing" science, but that's the great thing about homeschooling...we can let his interests guide us in science, reading, history, etc. I am grateful both kids love educational type shows, and one of their favorites is the Popular Mechanics for Kids (aka PMK) series. They have learned so much from it and always ask to get them at the library.

We are also working on a leaf book, which he is very excited about. When we went for a walk to gather leaves yesterday, he came home with about 20 extra-large maple leaves in addition to a bucket full of other leaves! I had to convince him to keep the best one of each kind and (gasp) throw away the rest.
